Webinar EU ETS: The Practical Guide

29 November 2023

EU ETS: The Practical Guide - Recap

The EU ETS takes effect on the 1st of January 2024. For our second webinar, we aimed to focus on the practical aspect of the EU ETS in the maritime industry. First, Mikkel Søholm Vestergaard addressed some of the frequently asked questions that we received during our previous webinars and events, as well as from our customers. Hans Lind Dollerup delved into the EU ETS from the owner’s perspective and the use of biofuel as a compliance tool.

Thank you for your active participation by answering the poll questions and asking your questions during our open mic session.

Below you can watch the sessions and download the presentation from the speakers and the EU ETS –Union Registry Guidance e-book.

If you have any questions regarding EU ETS, EUA or MRV, please do not hesitate to reach out to one of our experts in the New Fuels Team or your local Fuel Supplier. You will find the New Fuels Team at the bottom of this page.

Some of the questions that we have been asked

- Is a vessel traveling from Georgia (Black Sea) to West Africa subject to EU ETS if it refuels at an EU port?

- What if I call a non-EU port, but the location of the port is less than 300 nautical miles away from EU jurisdiction, will it still count as EU (e.g. Gibraltar)?

- Is it correct that Greenland is not included in the EU ETS?

- How are emissions for a voyage from the UK to the EU calculated?

- If I load on December 25, 2023 and discharge on January 26, 2024 - do I need to buy allowances for the entire voyage?

The practical implications of the EU ETS

Previously, it was believed that only the DOC holder, the Document of Compliance holder, who is usually the technical manager of the ship, had to sort out the compliance part and surrender the allowances to the European Union.

The additional clarification states that it is the registered owner, the legal owner of the ship, who is responsible for the compliance.

Hans Lind Dollerup shows different scenarios and strategies that owners have to take into consideration.

BIO Fuel as a compliance tool: Is there a business case to be made?

Using biofuel as a compliance tool could potentially reduce the need to buy allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).

Is there a business case to be made for using biofuel as a compliance tool?

The answer is likely to be negative, at least for a 100% biofuel approach. This is because biofuel is much more expensive than traditional fuel.

However, there might be a business case for using biofuel as a compliance tool if other factors are considered.
